Thundering Thursday

Happy Halloween!

In writing, we have been creating our own books. First, we read the story called, Red is Best by Kathy Stinson. Then, we wrote our own versions of it. Next week, we will type them up.

In art, we are creating portraits of the sky and moon based on the book called Owl Moon. We have learned how to make colours into tints by adding white, and into shades by adding black. We also learned how to make splatter art with paint.

In math, we have practiced showing numbers up to 5 and 10. The grade 2's have also practiced graphing their information.

Reminders:

Pictures are going home today. Please submit your order forms by Wednesday, November 6 if you would like to purchase them.

Freaky Friday

This week, we finished our work with repeating patterns. We completed a final assessment to see what we know about extending, comparing, describing and creating repeating patterns.

In science, we chose a purple, green and orange paint sample. Our job was to try and create that colour using only the primary colours, red, blue and yellow. An extra challenge was to try and create brown with these colors. Then, we gave our colors fall names. We also did a black sharpie experiment. Ask me what I learned about the color black.

Reminder:
Next Friday, November 1, is a PD day. Students do not have school.

Spelling List

Grade 2

This week in math, we continued our work with patterns. We focussed on extending, comparing and creating patterns. We have learned that identifying the core is really important for all of these concepts. To practice creating patterns, the students first built a pattern with manipulatives, and then translated it with actions to create a sound pattern. Ask your child to perform their sound pattern for you!

In science, we have learned all about primary colours and how we can combine them to make secondary colours!

Thursday October 10, 2019

This week we shared and wrote about what we are thankful for. Some of our ideas included family, iPads, brothers, sisters, cousins, clothes, boots, and turkey.

In math, we started learning about complex patterns. We found the core, translated, extended, created and compared a variety of patterns to each other.

Please ask me to tell you the core, translate, extend and compare the following patterns:

1.

2.

In science we looked at the different colors in leaves and wondered where the colors came from. Then we did a science experiment with the leaves. We found out that the sun is very important. It helps the leaves make the different colors that we see during spring, summer and fall.

Reminders:
Picture day is next Thursday, October 17

Have a nice Thanksgiving weekend! πŸ¦ƒ

Friday October 4, 2019

Today we went on our community walk to Confederation Park. We discovered different kinds of leaves, branches, big logs, one snow jump and places with lots of leaves to play with. There were so many leaves under the trees because they are falling off during the autumn season. We saw yellow, green, brown, red, yellow and green, purple and orange leaves. We noticed that the animals are getting ready to hibernate or migrate for the winter.

We also found some patterns on our walk!
Ask me what the pattern is in each image.

In science this week, we used colorful transparent paper to make our opaque sculptures on contact paper. We enjoyed using flashlights to explore the different colors.

In math, we finished our sorting unit and will begin our unit on patterns.

Reminders:
-Oral Health form is due Oct 10.
-Scholastic Book Orders are due Oct 10.

Have a great weekend!!
